Why Remote Mixing is the Future for Artists

Some people get anxious when they think of working with an online mix engineer remotely, and I completely understand. Your music is precious! After all, if you’re not in the room, how is that going to work?
Here’s the reality that most people don't consider: even if you sit in the studio all day while your song is mixed, you will eventually take it home to an environment you're familiar with... and it will sound different.
We can get a better result by flipping that process. If we start with you listening in a trusted environment you know inside and out, we eliminate the guesswork. The "car test" was the classic method born from this very reality. While judging balance and stereo image in a car is obviously flawed simply because of where you sit vs the speakers, you WILL absolutely know if the kick drum is hitting right or if the bass is sitting perfectly if you drive around half the day.
Pioneering a Better Workflow
Remote online mixing is common now, but when I started, it was a rarity. After moving away from the UK, it became the only way for most of my clients to continue working with me. I'll be honest, it probably cost me some clients back then who weren't ready for the shift. But being ahead of the massive changes in the music business is always better than being behind them. I'd spent years working in the traditional studio world, so I wasn’t going to let location stop me!
The internet made it all possible, enabling easy transfer of large files and smooth communication. At the same time, recording technology became more accessible and powerful. My own setup has become more compact and efficient over the years, and the results have only gotten better and the electricity bill lower. I'm all for it.
Smarter, Faster, and More Affordable
Let's talk about cost. Back in the 2000s, a day with me would cost around $500. A huge chunk of that, maybe $300, went straight to the studio owner. If you needed to come back for changes the next day? You'd pay it all over again.
The modern remote workflow is a game-changer for artists. You can get top-tier mixing from an experienced engineer without paying for expensive studio overhead, making professional sound more accessible than ever. Of course, you have to be careful who you choose, so always check the work first!
Our Seamless Communication & Revision Process
"Okay, but how do we talk about changes?" It's simple.
Once I have the first mix ready, I upload it to a dedicated online revision platform. This brilliant tool allows you to stream the mix and leave comments tied to specific timestamps in the song.
This accomplishes several crucial things:
Clarity: Everyone involved is always listening to the correct version.
Precision: You can leave a note like, "The snare is a bit loud at 2:15," and your note syncs directly to that point in my DAW. No more searching!
Convenience: You can listen and make notes wherever you are – on your studio monitors, on your phone, or yes, even in the car to check that bass!
More Than Just An Online Mix Engineer
With fewer indie artists working with dedicated, experienced producers, a second expert opinion can be invaluable. About 75% of the songs I receive are ready to mix, but the other 25% could be elevated with a few small arrangement or editing tweaks beforehand.
As a former record producer myself, I'm always happy to offer these suggestions. Think of me as a final creative partner on your team, ensuring every part of your song serves the final vision before we even start mixing.
The Benefits of Remote Mixing
You might be wondering, what are the real benefits of remote mixing? Well, let me break it down for you!
Flexibility and Convenience
One of the biggest perks of remote mixing is flexibility. You can work on your music whenever it suits you. No more rushing to book studio time or worrying about the clock ticking down. You can take your time to get everything just right.
Access to Top Talent
Remote mixing opens up a world of possibilities. You’re no longer limited to local engineers. Rather than worry about "hmm...who's a great audio engineer near me?" you can collaborate with the best in the business, no matter where they are. This means you can find someone whose style matches your vision perfectly.
Cost-Effective Solutions
As I mentioned earlier, remote mixing is often more affordable. You can save on studio fees and still get high-quality results. This is especially important for independent artists who are working with tight budgets.
Enhanced Collaboration
With online tools, collaboration can be smoother than ever. You can share ideas, get feedback, and make adjustments in real-time. This means your final mix can be a true reflection of your artistic vision.
